Deviation Actions

Isn't it amazing how many new deviations are submitted daily on dA?
That the amount of people who are interested in dA increases daily?
And the fact that so many artists have found a platform to dicuss and present their work to others?

Without a doubt it's a big, interesting and versatile community.
But isn't it amazing to always see the same artists on the frontpage every single day concerning the fact that so many new deviations have been submitted?

We're all aware of that and believe that this has to change. It is already quite difficult for the "unknown" artists to promote their work and gain more attention.

Clearly, we do not intend to deny the skills of those great artists who enrich the community by sharing their magnificent work. But we do intend to enhance the platform in such a way that "unknown" artists might get a real chance to draw the public attention to their own pieces of work by promoting it on the front page of the community.

In our opinion we think it unjust to only have the chance to be represented on the front page if one has the luck of having many watchers.

We would like a better system which allows a deviation to be seen on the front page if, for example, it has 'only' reached about 40 favourites and about 200 views.

Take a look at the actual situation: You have uploaded an impressive piece or art that gets faved according to the number of your total views/watchers. Then, however, a more popular deviant uploads a more or less 'average' deviation and automatically reaches more than the double of your favourites/views in a mere moment.

A new structure of the frontpage could enhance the actual competition on dA, i.e. popular deviants wouldn't be able to best the "unknown" artists by posting a rather average deviation.

A reasonable alternative to present the "daily top favourites" on the front page would be a bigger amount of thumbs which would show the 40 best deviations of the day in a random order.

We think it's in everyone's interest to change the current situation and make dA a place where creating and sharing unique art plays a far bigger role than scrambling for new watchers.

Quite a while back, the following was sent to Sapphiretiger:

Matthew,

Just as thousands and thousands of DA members think, I believe my work would please the tastes of many, if only it had that first kick off.

The Daily and the Featured, and whatever else is put up front big time, are as blessed as, well, er, blessed can be... Even the most basic or even straight out jokes are hit with 20 or more thousand visitors. And this is due to no more than a whim. The money that I have spent on AdCast is absolutely nothing in comparison. While an AdCast might generate a thousand or so, it is the free 20 or more thousand that really makes an impact. Up front, recommended and so on; it cannot be topped.

Having seen horrible things happen with "juried standards" (I am sure you have been impacted by, say, a couple of egocentric "famous" photographers picking their friends or someone with a style that is exactly like theirs), I was hoping DA would avoid such pitfalls.

After investigating their past choices, it is my decision that those who control my section(s) would never choose my work. It is perfectly natural for a "judge" to pick what they are comfortable with. And from that comes consistency. And from the consistency comes consistent omissions.

Actually, the most horrible feeling that I have, and one that certainly makes me want to stop adcasting, and one that makes it seem that forum and comment people are just blowing in the wind, is that the power is within a large clique. Now, when I feel that, I feel hopeless and helpless. I really do something that no one else is doing. I bet you have heard that before ! But I just wanted a fair amount of people to know that it is being done - that fractal, pixel, programmed, and even tablet (drawn) generated computer art are not the only computer arts. That there is actually some weirdo out there who can make human anatomy within a digital painting, with a mouse. I am not even interested in selling, which is good since that is zero also. Yet, when the work is seen, it is nice to hear someone, say, even be surprised (I am easily rewarded). I never hear other responses, if it is really seen.

Now, given all the above, I really do not expect things to change. Merely put me in the groups that came and went. Since DA is an enterprise, I am sure that it is keeping tab of nonfinanacial contributers versus real financial contributers. If I could ever find a site that is like DA in all aspects, except for the powerful prejudgements and labeling, I would support it to the hilt. And I mean financially, if they asked. My income, luckily, has nothing to do with art :-)

I am sure that you must get hit with this and similar topics all the time. The answer, though hard to administer and encourage, would be a quickly rotating group of at least competent practitioners and perhaps even "just a viewer/buyer" added. They would have no time to develop much bias and certainly would not display the same favored techniques as the group before them or after them. I would accept any variation that would side step the annointed jury or single judge. Oh, and those daily stats based on initial traffic alone are not good to base continued choices upon - those locations, labels and section leaders have already established who quickly gets visited - most popular based on past selection, watchers, favourites (as influenced), etc. The trite phrase, "The rich get richer, the poor get poorer" is applicable.

And, just as trite, "Thanks for listening".

EE This was never answered.
